Routine is a silent graphic novel I created in 2022. The title reflects the story— a single day in my life during the height of the pandemic while living in Manhattan.
Routine Silent Graphic Novel
Creating Routine became part of my daily routine. Each morning, I spent an hour drawing in silence before starting work. The concept of a “silent” graphic novel mirrors my personal experience of transitioning between deafness and hearing through the use of cochlear implants. The “on/off” act of putting my implants on informed the constraints of the illustrations, inspiring me to explore other “on/off” dynamics in the storytelling.
Like many, I struggled with intense anxiety from being confined indoors, isolation from loved ones, homesickness, the mental challenges of dating apps, and the constant fear of COVID-19.
For printing, I collaborated with John Wegner of Dummy Books. Using the meticulous RISO printing process, we carefully brought each page to life. We produced a limited run of 25 copies, which were sold individually, including at Printed Matter, Inc.
